Aotearoa-Owned Food Distribution
Service Foods is a proudly New Zealand-owned, family-operated food distribution business that has been supporting chefs and kitchens for over four decades.
Built on Growth

After immigrating to NZ, Stan and Vicki Balar purchased a small grocery store in Christchurch, selling fresh produce to the local community. Built on long hours and strong customer relationships, this marked the beginning of what would become Service Foods.

With growing demand from cafés and restaurants, the business expanded beyond retail, establishing Balar Wholesale Supplies. This shift into foodservice distribution enabled the business to scale and serve a broader customer base.

Rapid growth saw Balar's Wholefoods move into larger facilities on Garlands Road and expand its operational footprint. Strategic property investments and early acquisitions over the next few years strengthened capability, capacity, and supply across Christchurch.

The acquisition of Service Foods Christchurch marked a pivotal moment, expanding into chilled and frozen categories and accelerating growth. The business adopted the Service Foods name and joined the CDNZ buying group, strengthening national supply capability.

The acquisition of Polar Foods marked the business’s entry into Auckland, establishing a North Island presence and national reach. Continued growth led to the relocation of headquarters to Ōtāhuhu, supporting further scale.

Acquisitions, including NZ Wholesale Seafoods, Art of Produce and Meat Cuisine, expanded in-house processing across seafood, produce and meat. This marked a strategic shift towards greater control, quality, and end-to-end capability.

Service Foods expanded into Hamilton and made strategic acquisitions, enhancing its regional presence and capabilities. The company exceeded $100 million in annual revenue, showcasing its ongoing momentum and ambitious growth plans.

A series of acquisitions across Napier, Gisborne, Wellington and beyond accelerated nationwide distribution. This period established Service Foods as a truly national foodservice provider with broad regional coverage.

The opening of the Māngere headquarters marked a significant investment in infrastructure and future growth. Continued acquisitions across multiple regions and categories strengthened operational scale and capability nationwide.

Recent years have seen continued expansion, including the acquisition of Leonard’s and Chef Ready, alongside the opening of the Wellington headquarters. Recognition as a Deloitte Best Managed Company reflects the strength and maturity of the business today.

Regional and local distribution
Our relationships with suppliers are built on long-term partnerships and mutual success. We work closely with growers, producers and manufacturers across New Zealand and around the world, many of whom supply directly into our regional distribution network.
By partnering closely with suppliers at a local and regional level, we’re able to move products more efficiently, maintain quality and freshness, and respond quickly to customer demand. It also means our customers benefit from consistent supply, dependable delivery and access to a broad, carefully curated range — backed by people who know the product and the market.
At every step, our supplier partnerships support the same goal as our customer relationships: delivering the right products, in the right way, at the right time.

Our Impact
Our Commitment
Service Foods is a family-owned business and has been for over 30 years. Our commitment to sustainability, and desire for our business to be a force for good in the world, is something that is deeply personal to us.
Over the past three decades, our family and team have worked tirelessly to build a company based on strong values – not just for the benefit of our customers, but for the communities we serve, and for the environment.
Our fundamental values are embodied in three pillars of sustainability: Customer Obsessed, Boldly Innovative, and Legacy Building.
We work towards reducing our environmental impact in a range of ways, including reducing our emissions reductions and water usage, and investing in the wellbeing of our employees, and our community.

Our Impact
Our Commitment
Our commitment to excellence is supported by a drive to exceed the expectations of our customers through ethical and sustainable business practices. That means responsible sourcing, strong data protection and security, and full compliance with relevant regulations.
We reduce food miles by sourcing locally wherever possible and partnering with suppliers who prioritise sustainable, ethical farming. Where needed, we also draw on international markets to meet customer demand. Our Approved Supplier Programme is supported by a stringent Supplier Code of Conduct and Modern Slavery Policy that ensure our ethical standards are being met.
We achieved our goal of removing caged eggs from our supply chain in 2025, and are now working toward sourcing only free-range eggs by mid-2026.

Our Impact
Our Commitment
We understand our environmental footprint – energy-intensive facilities, refrigeration, and a national fleet – and we’re actively reducing it. Decarbonising a complex business is ongoing, but we’re committed to real progress without compromising quality or value.
We’re reducing waste, emissions, and resource use across our supply chain by cutting food waste through smarter logistics and automated stock systems, diverting off-grade produce to animal feed, and reducing and recycling packaging. Alongside this, we’re building accurate emissions measurement across all our facilities to guide ongoing improvement.
We actively manage water and energy use by tracking consumption monthly, installing water-saving technology such as reticulation systems, replacing inefficient equipment, and expanding renewable energy, with a target of sourcing 10% of our total energy from solar by 2030. Our fleet transition is also underway, with electric forklifts introduced from 2022 and a goal to reach a 10% battery-electric vehicle fleet by 2027.

Our Impact
Our Commitment
Building the legacy of Service Foods is about more than just our financial success. It is about supporting those who support us, including our communities – who are ultimately our customers – and our people. Strong businesses need strong communities and happy staff.
We invest in our people’s wellbeing and career growth through development programmes, including Skills for Success, a programme run by ServiceIQ that upskills our future leaders by offering them management qualifications, ongoing leadership programmes through Solomon Group, and ongoing sustainability training. We also offer vocational training through butchery apprenticeships.
We engage meaningfully with tangata whenua under the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and have begun incorporating te reo Māori throughout our company documents. As a business founded by immigrants, we recognise the value of cultural diversity in building our collective strength.
We also give back through our partnership with Ronald McDonald House, food donations via New Zealand Food Network & other local food waste initiatives, and support for local schools and education initiatives.

Our Impact
Our Commitment
Service Foods is focused on upholding high standards of transparency and maintaining enduring partnerships with our stakeholders – our customers, our suppliers, our community, our environment, and our people, as well as investors, regulators, and other partners.
We maintain strong policies, regular internal audits, rigorous compliance checks, and public reporting on ethics and sustainability.
Sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community outcomes are built into our governance framework, ensuring long-term, responsible growth.
Our Board has full oversight of our impacts and strategy, helping Service Foods continually improve and thrive.
